There are different types of cattle breeds. There are breeds for dairy purposes and there are breeds for meat/beef purposes or both. There are also multi-purpose cattle breed – for beef, dairy and draft. Cattle breeds also come in different sizes, color and appearance but only few breeds have long hair. Here are some of the few cattle breed with long hair and their uses.
Highland Cattles don’t just have long hair; they also have long horns and come in various colors such as black, red, yellow, brindled or dun. This breed of cattle is developed in Scotland, UK.
It is primary raised for its tender and lean meat. Highland Cattles are exported in many countries such as Australia and North America. It is also called Kyloe.
The Yak is an important beast of burden in the Himalayan region. This longhaired animal is also common in Tibet, Mongolia and Russia. Its binomial name is Bos grunniens or Bos mutus. This huge animal is the world’s second largest bovid reaching a height of up to 2.2 meters at the shoulder and can attain a weight of up to 1,000 kg with a body length of up to 3.4 meters excluding the tail which is about 100 cm long. Domesticated Yaks are smaller than wild Yaks.
Domesticated Yaks are raised as beast of burden, for transportation purposes, for their milk, meat, fiber and hides. The Yak’s milk is used in producing cheese and butter.
The Belted Galloway is a cattle breed with curly and moderately long hair. It originated from Galloway, Scotland; hence the name. It is known for its quiet temperament.
These huge cattle breed that can attain a weight of up to 1,045 kg is primarily raised for its quality marbled beef and milk. It is also bought to adorn pastures because of its striking appearance.
The Salers is a breed of cattle with moderately long and curly hair. It is from Cantal, France. It is called Race de Salers or La Salers in French. This large cattle breed can weigh up to 750 kg and stands at a height of 1.4 m.
It was originally bred for work. It is valued for its milk and its meat. Afemale Salers can produce about 3,000 kg of fat-rich milk annually. The milk is traditionally used in the production of cheese. The breed is also used to produce veal calves by cross breeding with Charolais cattle. Salers are also exported in different countries worldwide.
Blaarkop is a cattle breed with moderately long and curly hair. It was developed in Groningen, Netherlands and has been in existence since the 14th century. This large cattle can attain a weight of up to 800 kg. Its name means “blister head” in Dutch.
It is primarily raised for its milk and its meat. A female Blaarkop can produce an average of 6,000 kg every year.
The Galloway is a hairy cattle breed that originated in Galloway, Scotland. This breed is recognized as one of the longest established breeds of beef cattle in the world. This hornless cattle can achieve a weight of up to 860 kg.
